Speakers

Ronald D. Ziemian, Ph.D., P.E.

Ronald D. Ziemian, Ph.D., P.E. is a distinguished professor at Bucknell University, holding degrees of BSCE, MENG, and PhD from Cornell University. He is highly regarded for his contributions to the field of structural engineering, particularly in the design and analysis of steel and aluminum structures.

Dr. Ziemian is a prolific author, having co-authored the influential textbook "Matrix Structural Analysis" (Wiley, 2000) and playing a key role in developing the educational software MASTAN2. He has also edited the 6th edition of the "Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures" (Wiley, 2010). His expertise extends to serving as the Co-Editor in Chief of Elsevier’s Journal of Constructional Steel Research.

His professional involvement includes membership in AISC's Committee on Specifications, chairing AISC's TC3 – Loads, Analysis, and Stability, and past chairmanship of AISC's Technical Group on Inelastic Analysis and Design. He also contributes to the AISI and Aluminum Association Specification Committees and is actively engaged with the Steel Joist Institute.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ziemian has received numerous accolades for his contributions to the profession, including the ASCE Norman Medal (1994), the AISC Special Achievement Award (2006), the ASCE Shortridge Hardesty Award (2013), and the AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award (2019). These awards recognize his exceptional work in the stability analysis and design of metal structures, highlighting his significant impact on the field of structural engineering.

Bo Dowswell, P.E., Ph.D

Bo Dowswell, P.E., Ph.D., has been deeply involved in the steel industry since 1985, starting as a detailer. He has since earned B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Auburn University and The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Dowswell is a professional engineer specializing in steel structures, working as a consultant and researcher at ARC International. He also serves as an adjunct professor at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, focusing his research and teaching on steel connection design.

Dr. Dowswell's contributions to the field are significant, notably as the author of AISC Design Guide 33-Curved Member Design. In recognition of his research and publications on gusset plates, he was honored with the 2020 AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award.
